Prop Creation

Feedback from our peers and our teachers told us that our narrative was not clear enough in our video; whilst it was clear that the main character was in mourning, it was not clear who he was mourning. To rectify this, we decided to make it clear through the use of one prop; a funeral booklet. This prop helped us to display to the audience that the main character was mourning a girl but it's up to the audience to interpret their relationship. We also included the quote "there's no place like home". This fits in with the lyrics of the song we have chosen as it says "Dorothy was right though"; it is a reference to the Wizard of Oz and saying "there's no place like home" perfectly fits in with our video as the main character has left his home.
We decided to leave the "In Loving Memory Of" section blank simply to save time because you won't be able to see it anyway.
Within the film, we will have a close up of the protagonist looking at this document.

Final Version of poster

This is the final draft of our poster. As you can see, we have added the social media logos in order to create a greater sense of audience connection; the audience can connect and interact with the song on social media which creates more of a sense of connection. We have also changed the text colour to make it easier to read.

Logo creation

Because we have to make our own logos, we have created this one because we think it looks quite similar to existing logos however it is still original. This is good because it looks like something the Arctic Monkeys would actually use but we have created it ourselves. The slant of the font fits with the narrative of our video because in the video the protagonist does not know what he wants or what he is doing; he is confused which is reflected by the slant of the font.

Creating the record label logo

Here are the record label logos that we have created. We have decided to use the name "Kings Records" as previously we have used the name "Sultans media" however we wanted to suit the genre more, and we felt "Kings" was more appropriate. We have decided we are going to use the middle logo and put it in a white box with a black border in our ancillary tasks.

CD cover back case draft 3

On this draft, we decided to remove the outline of the text and instead add a translucent box in the background so it is still readable but doesn't look tacky, which is how we felt the outlines looked.

Poster flat plan

This is a basic flat plan of what our poster is going to look like. It will feature the main character looking out over the river Thames.

Results of disagreement

The image above is showing the results of the disagreement that we had with the album cover.
The first option that Harry insisted was better won and people believed that it looked the better, which resulted in the first option getting the most votes.
The image above is the second option but it was not a popular option with our peers so we have decided to use the other option.

Album Cover Disagreement

During the editing stages there was a disagreement when editing the album front cover. Harry really liked having the title of the album in stages and in capital letters but I personally liked having it on the same level but not in caps lock.

Harry believes by having the title in caps lock it looks more professional. However i believe that having the title in normal casing can reflect on the character. The reason for this is because the character can be interpreted as being quite childish in the video.

To decide which one is best we will be asking our peers on which one they prefer.

We will use the results to see which one is more popular and then we will use the one that is more popular with our peers.

Back of album image

The reason as to why we want this image to be the back cover for our album is because of the great lighting and space on the image. The space on the right is big enough to put the songs from the album on.
It also shows the main character pondering; he is reflecting on his time in the city.
The image represents obscured emotion from the character in the city.

Poster feedback #1

We have received a lot of feedback on our first poster draft. We have been told that we should choose an image that shows more of the main character; he is the sole focus of the video. This is rectifiable as we have a lot of original images that we can choose from.

We are also going to correct the spacing so that the ‘O’ in ‘Old’ is not disrupting the view of the lamppost; this is a stereotypical feature of the city, which we are going to include. We are also going to remove the Domino records logo and move it to the back cover.

Copyright Importance

Copyright explained and importance of abiding to copyright

When we sent an email to Domino records we stated that we wanted to see copyright for the song Old Yellow Bricks by the Arctic Monkeys so we can create a music video for educational purposes. They did not respond to our email but from previous knowledge with Domino records we knew that they had accepted our conditions because previously we used one of their songs and had permission to do so and we didn’t have any copyright strikes against us. If we did not seek permission for copyright then this would of resulted in our video having a copyright strike against it, which will then result in our video being taken down on YouTube, and even potentially face a penalty so it is very important to abide to copyright procedures. However to avoid these procedures being taken we will ensure that we email Domino records to gain access to this song in a legal and professional manor.

Copyright basics

Copyright acknowledges the efforts to create something and giving them the title of the creator and you must ask for permission to manipulate or use something that someone has created. It is effectively intellectual property that someone has created themselves and they control who has access to this and they can make profit from this as well like a YouTube video. YouTube music videos or YouTube videos make money from the advertisements that are on the video and the view count that the video receives. Record labels that represent the artists own most music video copyrights. If we fail to gain access to copyright then we can be excused because we are using this song for an understandable subject, which is for educational purposes.

Textual Analysis Practice

These images show feedback I have received on some Textual Analysis pieces of work, this is going to help me with my music video textual analysis as it has improved my analytical skills. I have focused on things such as post-modernism and I will use these skills in my music video textual analyses.

How we would distribute our music video

There are many ways that we can get our music video distrusted. We are not a studio and don't have our own record label so we cannot get a professional contract to distribute our music video. However there are other ways and one of them would be to use YouTube. On YouTube we would create our own YouTube channel that would have a title relating to the band Arctic Monkeys and through their we would be able to upload our music video with labels so that the audience can easily find it. After uploading this to the YouTube channel we will use social media pages like Facebook and Twitter to send out messages about the upload of the latest music video so that more people are aware. Additionally links to the music video will be put up on fan pages of Arctic Monkeys and message boards for music videos will be used so that more people can view our music video.

Our song choice

The two most popular songs that we were going to base our music video off were either Sweater weather by The Neighborhood or Old Yellow Bricks by Arctic Monkeys. We decided to go with Old yellow bricks because when we analysed the lyrics we realized that we could create a higher quality production with the lyrics in this song because the shots can be easily planned and the context of the lyrics were easy to understand. The lyrics of sweater weather were more difficult to deal with simply because it would be hard to recreate during filming to give meaning. Also the song is long and is not upbeat which can be a problem for us because it can cause the video to be boring because it is long and not upbeat and having quality content which will make it interesting even though the beat is not uplifting can be a very difficult task. However Old Yellow Bricks is the opposite and is a song that is upbeat and a song where filming quality footage can be easily achieved.

Ancillary image no.3 analysis

This image is very similar to the first image, however we believe it is not as suitable, simply because the character is in the middle of the frame as opposed to the left hand side. This makes it more difficult to feature a track list on the album cover which we feel is an important aspect. We have considered using this image however we will most likely opt for something else.

Ancillary image no.6 analysis

We have all of these images and we think that they may be useful to us in some way, however we have not yet decided where we would use them. These images help to depict the grimier side of the city whilst it is still clear that it is in fact a city. We may utilise these pictures in our digipak as they clearly show that the protagonist is unhappy.

Ancillary image no.2 analysis

We feel like this image would be suitable for the bag cover of our CD case. This is because there is good framing; there is a lot of space on the right that would be perfect for a tracklist. Also, the position of the protagonist provides a very reflective tone which fits with the narrative within our video; the protagonist is trying to work out why he no longer feels like he is at home.

Ancillary no.5 image analysis

We feel like this image would be good for our poster; we wanted to create quite a poster that somewhat strays away from the ideas within our video, our video has a heavy focus on seeing the protagonist's face however with this image we chose one that instead shows the back of his head. This helps to create the representation that maybe there is more to this character than how he is presented within the actual video; he is not this black and white simple character that simply wishes to leave for no reason, there are much deeper reasons behind his choices.

This image will help us to portray this as yet again, it has a reflective tone that leaves the audience wondering what he is thinking about. Again, this image captures a lot of pivotal points about London such as the Thames, the classic lamppost, the bridge and the skyline visible in the background.

Ancillary image no.4 analysis

We really like this image and so do our audience. We think that it encapsulates a lot of elements of the city that are important to our plot. For example, you can see the City of London crest, the cannon street sign, the Barbican Smithfield sign, the red telephone box and the cathedral. These aspects are all common features of a city especially London.

Also, the natural aspect of this image which comes from the trees on the left and the plants on the right helps to contrast the urban scenery; these things capture the natural aspect of the place the protagonist moves to to escape the city.

Overall the mies-en-scene of this image helps to justify us choosing this image as our CD cover. The spacing of the image with the stairs gives us a place to put text which is what we are planning ongoing for out CD cover.

Ancillary image no.1 analysis

We feel like this image is perfect for what we want. The reason as to why we want this image to be the back cover for our album is because of the great lighting and space on the image. The space on the right is big enough to put the songs from the album on.
It also shows the main character pondering; he is reflecting on his time in the city.
The image represents obscured emotion from the character in the city.
This image is preferable to all the other options because of the side angle; we think it creates a more reflective tone.
